The Zugspitz is Germany's highest mountain at 2964 metres and the skiing takes place on the small glacier just below the main peak. Two cable cars (one from Garmisch and one from Ehrwald in Austria) and a mountain railway access the skiing there. There are five T-bar lifts (some double lifts) and a short chairlift serving 11 different runs. Unusually for a glacier ski area, the runs are mainly medium ("red") in standard with one short difficult ("black") run.
The town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany's top ski resort. It is only 45 minutes drive away from Seefeld. There are a number of options for a skiing daytrip from Austria. The Hausberg, Wank and Kreuzeck/Osterfelderkopf areas are close to the town and can be reached by car or the local Zugspitz train. However, the main attraction for skiers coming from Austria is the Zugspitz ski area at just under 3000 metres. This can also be reached via the Zugspitz train, but most people with a car will drive the extra 20 minutes to the Eibsee lake and the bottom of the German Zugspitz cable car.
